Before George bargained with Lilith, before Percy followed Amara into the storm, before Mary dreamed of bringing the dead back to life, there was Dante Alighieri.

Author’s Note

Dante Alighieri was real.

His life, exile, political conflicts, marriage to Gemma Donati, literary legacy, and Divine Comedy all belong to history.
This novel does not attempt to rewrite that history as fact. It takes the known life of Dante Alighieri and imagines what might have existed in the spaces history could never record.

Gemma Donati was also a real historical figure and Dante’s wife. Much less is known about the private reality of their marriage than about Dante’s public literary legacy. In this novel, their relationship is reimagined through the emotional and supernatural mythology of The Cursed Poets.

Berith is a demon drawn from historical demonological tradition. His bargain with Dante, the visions of Hell, the supernatural consequences surrounding The Divine Comedy, the price attached to Dante’s name, and the later identity of Dante Ravencroft belong entirely to the fictional mythology of The Cursed Poets and my connected Hell Toucheduniverse.

The opening verse attributed to Dante in this novel is an original work of fiction written by me, inspired by his life, ambition, exile, marriage, and literary legacy. It is not a lost, recovered, or previously unpublished poem, letter, or manuscript by Dante Alighieri.

Any other fictional verses, letters, burned poems, confessions, contracts, or passages attributed to Dante within the novel are likewise original works created for this story. Genuine quotations from Dante Alighieri’s published writings remain his own work.

Historical figures, places, dates, writings, and events appear throughout the novel, sometimes represented faithfully and sometimes adapted to serve the fictional story.

Where history ends, the bargain begins.
